Growing Up Ruins the Kid Magic
Late post but I just found time to write this. OOPS! I wanted to just vent about the coming(now past) holiday of Halloween.
With Halloween comes the haunted house, scary movies, candy and of course dressing up in costumes. I've noticed growing up the meaning of Halloween changes and changes. Halloween from a child and a teenagers perspective is very very different. Which is a sad thing in my opinion.
As a child growing up, I loved to raid my mom's closet and dress up like her. When Halloween would come by, it held unlimited amount of choices of what to be, even if it was just for the day. Halloween meant dressing up as someone you looked up to (e.g princesses and super heroes). Going to school in your Halloween costume was always a big deal for me. Getting up early and spending a great deal of time parading around the house semi dressed just excited that it was finally Halloween! School was spent doing Halloween activities and having a school-wide Halloween parade in the gym. Going trick or treating was always fun. Whether rain or shine, I always tried to go and make it down the block at least. Tired and out of energy not even making it all the way, my dad would carry me home and I would be asleep before we got home.
Those are the memories I cherish, because as I see my siblings grow up, their childhood is so very different than mine. The costumes for one thing are very different, and for me the Halloween vibe for some is different.
Another thing I've noticed with the process of growing up, Halloween now as a young adult is so very different. Once you hit high school and from then on, it's just another excuse to party. Another excuse to go out, get wasted and for girls, an excuse to dress in ways you wouldn't on any other day.
Growing up ruins the kid magic in my opinion. All these holidays growing up had a whole different meaning to me than they do now. Around the time of all these holidays, there was this excitement in the air, and as you grow up it slowly disappears. Now, it's all a popularity race. Who can get drunk the most, who can get invited to the most parties, the most likes on your pictures, etc. And i feel like there's more to life and enjoyment than just than.
But hey, that's just my opinion, some say otherwise, but this is just a small glimpse of what I think about at time :)

Yeah I actually agree with you 100%. Halloween used to be dress up, get some candy, maybe watch some scary movies or tv shows. Now it's a big stress to make sure you're invited to the "best" parties which end up being a lousy time.
ReplyDeleteThere are good things about growing up. But this is obviously not one of them.
Nice blog by the way. :)
As the generations growing up change, in a way I feel everything else has to change and conform to their needs and preferences. There are definitely good things about growing up ahaha working on a few flashback posts dont worry ;)
